Your Fab 5: Q&A to change your life

It all starts in your head. Eventually, whatever goes in comes out of your mouth and turns into your actions. Think of words as seeds. Those seeds are planted by the things you hear and see. They are nourished and supported by repetition and soon block out other thoughts and ideas.

Unfortunately, these thoughts are the negative input we get from the world around us and, more importantly, the world that is in our immediate sphere of influence — our circle of influence or inner circle. You may believe there’s nothing fabulous about your inner circle, but your inner circle may well define where you are today in your life. We’ll call it your Fab 5.

  • Scott Anderson believes we are the product of three things: The people we hang out with, the books we read and the media we watch.
  • Charlie Jones says, “You will be the same person in five years as today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”
  • And Jim Rohn says it this way: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

The Bible is replete with examples of warnings about the influences on your life. If 1 Corinthians says, “Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals,” doesn’t it make sense that good company encourages good morals?

Is it any wonder that our country is in a mess it’s in? We are bombarded daily with words planted like seeds in our minds that steer us every which way but loose. So, who are you hanging out with? What media are you watching? What’s the last book you read? If Fab 5 is a new term and philosophy, here’s a quick definition and a few questions about your own Fab 5.

What in the heck is a Fab 5? You have a Fab 5. Everyone has a Fab 5. These are the five people who influence you the most — for good or bad. Think of this as your team, the people you hang with most and — for good or bad — the people who speak most into your life.

Does it matter who is in my Fab 5? Absolutely. You are where you are today in part because of the people in your inner circle — and those who have been part of it in the past. Want to change your life? Change your Fab 5, and you’ll likely discover an instant change in the trajectory of your life.

Can I have anybody in my Fab 5? That depends on how badly you want to improve your life. If you’re happy or content, keep doing what you’re doing. (Insert the definition of insanity here.) If you often are discouraged, feel like you’re stuck, or constantly want more in life, you probably need a change. The more specific you choose your Fab 5, though, the more likely you are to change your life exponentially.

Okay, who do I need in my Fab 5? Good question; glad you asked. Among others, you need a coach, a mentor, and a solid friend. Your Fab 5 should have specific characteristics, but one of the key traits is that they are there for you. In other words, someone you can call at 2 a.m. if you need help. It’s important to understand that these aren’t “yes” men and women.

Is my Fab 5 only related to people in my inner circle? No, but you need five people you can count on for various support. But if you have main influences like television, news, Facebook, or other groups, they likely impact your life. Again, for good or bad.

So, are you suggesting that I need to get rid of some of my friends? You absolutely should do a review. You review your insurance from time to time and take inventory of your finances, right? Likewise, this is an area that may be holding you back or otherwise stalling progress in your life.

Got other questions about your Fab 5? We address them all and answer the tough questions about the Negative Nellies, the Debby Downers, the coach or mentor you need, and the ace-in-the-hole for you. And we also have answers to a very critical question: What if one of my worst influences is a spouse, a boss, or another family member?

The key is to stay positive, keep moving, be very aware, and take action.
